I write for fun.
This is probably just as well.
By profession I’m an artisan jeweller which is marginally more lucrative than the writing but not as remunerative as, say, driving a van.
However, I love creating things and I dabble in all kinds of different disciplines and media and also write a little as well.
My writing is an attempt to amuse but also to communicate and my hope is that the one will enable to other. I have written two novels and in each case I started with something that I wanted to say and then it got out of hand.
In my fist book, Bec’s Dragon, I wanted to express that fact that being a child, even one not experiencing obvious harm or deprivation, can be very difficult. As adults we forget or wilfully deny this and paint childhood as a halcyon period prior to the real struggles of adult life. In reality, although a butterfly no doubt has it’s troubles, it’s getting out of the chrysalis that’s hell.
In Falling, I had other things that I wanted to say; things about which we tend to react with emotion rather than thought. My hope is that it will provoke discussion and lead to a more nuanced understanding of some of the more difficult issues with which we struggle as a community.
I also write short blog posts on things that I’m musing about. You can read (and comment on) these by clicking the Thoughts button below.
